Periodontal disease is a disease of the supporting teeth structures, and periodontology is a branch of dental medicine that studies prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.
Treatment of periodontal disease begins most often with conservative methods – removal of soft debris and concrements (scaling), and periodontal pockets treatment (“curettage”).
Basic surgical treatment of periodontal disease is flap surgery – direct approach and cleaning of the deep periodontal pockets, sometimes with the use of bone substitutes (“artificial bone”) and membranes, which enables healing of the supporting tissues of the teeth.
